The Long Distance Triathlon Base Plan
is a 21 week training plan with a
limit of 10 training hours per week

This programme will suit any athlete who wants to achieve a good
base of fitness while still maintaining their existing lifestyle

The Goal

The goal of this training programme is to get you in the perfect condition to start a 20 week race specific programme at the completion of this schedule.

If you can complete 200 hours of training without injury or illness then I guarantee that you will achieve that goal.

The Sacrifice

It should require very little sacrifice in:

  • your social life
  • sleep
  • or other spare time

Most committed triathletes should be able to achieve this level of training on a weekly basis.

The Plan

  • It’s balanced – which means that there is an even emphasis on all 3 disciplines
  • There are 7 x 3 week blocks – (2 weeks building fitness + 1 week of recovery)
  • Blocks 1-3 are very simple, with a gradual increase in volume (building to 10 hours per week) and slight alterations to intensity
  • Blocks 4-7 see a plateau in the total duration, but an increase in intensity and there is also some variation in the hours per week of each sport which allows for the introduction of a longer bike or longer run

Training PeaksIf you can get to the end of block 7 having completed the majority of the workouts you will be ready to start a 20 week race specific programme.
