Triathlon England North West - Referee Courses May 2010 Triathlon England North West are pleased to announce two Level one Referee courses taking place in May. The importance of the referee cannot be underestimated and without them we simply wonât have a fair and even sport. By becoming a referee you will be putting something back into Triathlon but we stress you wonât be called upon every week, the more refereeâs we have in place the less you will be required. We hope that every club in the region will consider nominating at least one referee. The first of the courses will take place at Warrington Sports Club on Tuesday 4th May starting at 7pm, refreshments will be provided. This will be tutored by Sue Taylor. Sue is a very experienced referee who got involved in refereeing after watching her husband Paul taking part in events and decided that rather than just standing around sheâd like to assist. Sue is the North West Referee Co-ordinator and sits on the British Triathlon Rules and Technical Committee. The second course will take place at South Ribble Tennis Centre on Saturday 15th May from 2pm. Tutoring this course will be Dave Rigby. Clumber Race Is A Classic The Clumber Classic Duathlon attracted a high class field and some fast racing on Saturday, 6 March. The lure of National titles, National Ranking points as well as European and World qualifier slots attracted some of the biggest names in the sport. Olympic rowing Champion, James Cracknell, OBE was amongst those gunning for a place at the 2010 Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships in September. Eimear Mullan held off multiple World Age Group Champion, Emma Dews, to take the British title in 2:01.51. She finished with a one and a half minute winning margin after the two fastest runs of the day. She also had the second best cycle leg for a strong all round performance. Emma Dews finished in 2:03.21 and Esther Evans claimed 3rd place with 2:05.18. Daniel McCarthy took the win in the menâs race in 1:49.37. A fast opening run, followed by a blistering bike leg, which was bettered only by second placed Wayne Smith, set him up for a one minute win over the former National Champion. Smith did, however, take the victory in the highly competitive 35-39 year age group with his final time of 1:50.46. The final podium spot was taken by Lee Piercy in 1:51.54. Double Olympic Champion rower James Cracknell finished in 14th place overall with 1:55.26 and 6th in his Age Group, which, subject to confirmation, could be enough to ensure a slot for the World Championships. He was one of only nine athletes to record a sub 60 minute bike leg but struggled on the run having not run for two weeks prior to the event. The British Duathlon Championships results were: Male1st Daniel McCarthy 1:49:37 2nd Wayne Smith 1:50:463rd Lee Piercy 1:51:54Â Female1st Eimear Mullan 2:01:51 2nd Emma Dews 2:03:21 3rd Esther Evans 2:05:18
